?? Top Computer Skills Your Resume Needs Today [2018] 39 These are the computer skills most in demand right now. Photo by Jesus Kiteque It used to be that unless you were a software engineer, some kind of designer or in telecommunications, computer literacy meant you were familiar with the basic parts of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and perhaps PowerPoint. A skill was then added to the list if it appears in at least 100 open jobs on Indeed, although most of the listed skills appear in over 1,000 open jobs as of right now. As the list is meant to be of the software skills most in demand for the above industries, don't use it as an exhaustive list of what's needed by everyone in that industry. Far from it. There are many jobs that only require some of the listed skills for that industry, and there are more software tools and packages that didn't make the list because they don't appear in enough Indeed.com job openings, which means they aren't in high enough demand. This list is also not comprehensive. It's 100% certain that there are other highly-in-demand skills that didn't get included simply because I didn't hear about them, but feel free to suggest more in the comments below and I'll check if they should be added. The list isn't perfect. Indeed's search engine doesn't make it easy to distinguish a skill's demand in one industry when it's in demand in multiple industries. Also, sometimes a software package can be labeled as both e.g. a CRM and a Marketing Automation tool, but to keep the list readable, I had to choose a sub-category in each case. Wherever parts of Microsoft Office appear and reappear, it's because intermediate or advanced level knowledge is required. Question of the article Which computer skills did you expect to see in the list? Tell us in the comments. READ NEXT: 115+ Resources for Showing Off Your Work Skills

New gender gaps for the new millennium

New gender gaps for the new millennium I have said about ten million times that there is no more glass ceiling, there is no more salary gap between men and women, and there is no reason to keep bitching about sexual harassment because its merely a legal issue, not a men-are-evil issue. Okay. So if the gender gaps are not around these feminist favorites, then are there any gender gaps we should be concentrating on? Yes. Here are three: 1. The startup gap. Women need to be compensated at a higher rate than men if they are to give up their personal lives in order to work. Law firms accomplish this by keeping women on partner track even when theyre part-time. Corporations do this by offering flex time and other business-bending options for high-performing women who want to take care of kids. VCs talk endlessly about why there are so few women running venture backed companies, but its incredulous talk. The reason is that VCs dont pay women more. Heres the bottom line: If you take a man and a woman doing the same office job and the same parenting job, the man will think hes doing a good job at parenting, but not the woman. This makes genetic sense. The men had to think the kids were fine when they left the cave to hunt. Or else they wouldnt leave and no one would have eaten. The women had to think the kids always needed more attention. Otherwise, the women would say, This is good enough and then the kids would starve or get eaten by lions. How this translates to the VC world is that you need to spend TONS of time away from kids doing a startup. For women to do that, they need to be compensated more than men. Other industries have done it in order to benefit from womens brains. The VC world should follow suit. 2. The orgasm gap. People who have orgasms do better at work: they earn more, they hang out with higher powered people, they are better at public speaking, and they walk with a more confident gait, which, of course, inspires confidence. So we need to pay attention to the orgasm gap, which Hannah Seligson reports in the Daily Beast: Women are shattering political glass ceilings, surpassing men in the workforce, and even winning Indy-car races. But theres one area where the gender gap has proved particularly stubborn: The orgasm gap. Paula England, a professor of sociology at Stanford University, says, The orgasm gap is an inequity thats as serious as the pay gap, and its producing a rampant culture of sexual asymmetry. Where does this orgasm gap come from? Probably the amount of effort expended in bed?and whos expending it. Englands study found that women give oral sex to their male partners in all contexts?from casual hookups to serious relationships?at significantly higher rates than men do. (Hat tip: Sepideh) And if youre wondering how this pans out across generations, things seem to get worse in the younger crowdCaitlin Flanagan reports in the Atlantic that girls are giving blow jobs just to get the boys to shut up. 3. The fun gap. As soon as men and women start aging, the men are happier. Maybe they have had more training on how to have fun. But life is too difficult for any of us to wait to have fun. So we should all start learning to have some levity early on, and this is the damage of the fun gap. You can see the gap at the bar. Alcohol makes us have a more broad imagination and do a wider range of things. So why is it more acceptable for professional men than professional women to go out with friends and get drunk? Why is it okay for men to get drunk in order to have an easier time hooking up, but its not okay for women? This is such a serious problem that New York magazine calls the gap the the last frontier of feminism. Its clear that women are spending more time following the rules than men, and people who have more fun actually do better in life: their fun snowballs, and the more we enjoy the more we get of what we enjoy. It starts in kindergarten, where the girls sit in their chairs and pay attention in class, and they socialize in the lunchroom. The boys, on the other hand, have spent the first five years of their lives turning everything into a gun or sword and cannot be contained in a classroom atmosphere. Yes, these are generalizations, but as the mom of two young boys, I have never heard any parent disagree with these generalizations, (and its official that boys are six months behind girls developmentally by kindergarten). I did not buy guns for my sons. I didnt have to. They can use anything. And I remember as a fourth grader thinking, (from the back of the classroom, where all the strong performing girls sit because they dont need help from the teacher) Wow, the boys sure are doing poorly in school. The problem is that the boys are having all the fun. Women are doing better than men in school but school is not what makes kids successful at work. What actually prepares you for life is athletics, aiming high, breaking rules, playing video games. Girls should do those things more. Then, as they grow up, they should spend their time figuring out how to get more orgasms.

Get Schooled on Professional Copywriting for Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Get Schooled on Professional Copywriting for Your Personal Brand - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today I interviewed Jon Wuebben, who is an expert in website copywriting. It is a very important topic today because SEO is how we position our own brands in search engines, so were found. Before you even start writing a blog post, you need to think of an SEO strategy. This means that you must disperse keywords throughout your writing for the search engines. Enjoy the interview. What is more important content or communication? Do you need both or will be just find you if you produce remarkable or unique content? You really need both..content are the words that make up your site or blog and communication is the exchange you have with prospects and customers. Blogs lend themselves well to both of these elements and is part of the reason why they are so popular. With your content, you want to make it interesting, benefit-rich and be sure to use a call to action. What do you want the visitor to do? Download a e-book? Contact you? Make it easy for them to do this. In terms of communicating, you want to make sure you are using the words and phrases that resonate with your target audience. Do you feel someone can have a successful blog if their design sucks but their content is interesting? Yes, they can. There are many examples of this. Content is and always will be king. But, it really is a mistake to discount the design of your site. People respond to a nice color scheme, good contrast and eye catching design elements. Plus, its not very hard to find a great designer nowadays. Just be sure to look at samples before you go with them. What 3 SEO tips would you recommend to people who want to rank high on Google for their name? 1. use their name in the title tag 2. use their name on the page itself at the top (in a header), in the first line of the first paragraph, in the middle of the page and towards the end 3. aggressively pursue links for your keyword phrases Aside from blogs, how do you make wikis/RSS and podcasts viral? Start a newsletter! Send it out to your prospects an customers on a regular basis and include your RSS feed, wikis and podcast links in the newsletter. Whats the difference between copywriting for a Fortune 500 company and a small business with less than 30 employees? Copywriting for a large company can be an extensive process many pages and lots of products and services. Youre also usually speaking to many different audiences and target customers. With a small business, you need to be focused on nurturing and appealing to every prospect that shows interest, because one of your goals is to build your database and client list as quickly as possible. The copy needs to reflect this. Personal emails and even phone calls can be a good idea for the small business looking to grow and compliment the copy that appears on your site. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7PDWOEY2eo] What tools are out there for checking links, pagerank and keyword rankings? Google your URL and use LinkPopularity.com (checking links), download the Google Toolbar (pagerank indicator) and use semmetrix.com (keyword rankings). How do you think copywriting and/or SEO will change in the future? Searchchanges will dictate copywriting changes Consumer’s wants and needs will lead copywriting changes Customer (user) generated content continues to grow Universal/blended search: gets sophisticated Personalized search: different search results for different people Social networks take on new life Consumer reviews continue to be important - Jon Wuebben is a veteran copywriter, speaker, entrepreneur and online marketing leader. How to find inspiration at work

How to find inspiration at work The research about inspiration is, generally, that it improves our wellbeing but we cannot control when it comes to us. That said, opening ourselves to new experiences makes inspiration more likely. And surrounding ourselves with inspired people makes us more likely to feel inspired ourselves. We constantly look for work that inspires us, but I have found in my career that often the jobs that were most inspiring to me were not necessarily at companies doing inspiring work. One example of this is a job I had at CyberMedia. You cant Google CyberMedia because it was purchased by McAfee. But before it was purchased by McAfee, it was a scrappy startup full of mostly Indian men who were of the age when they should be getting married, but were, instead, building a software company, so they would go home to India for a few days, get married, and come back to work. As they got close to their first ship date, they had to hire non-developers to make a site for launch. I was one of those people they hired. CyberMedia was the first company to offer a product that automatically updated itself via the Internet. I know that because it was our big selling point. A few things happened at CyberMedia that were especially memorable. The first thing is that work hours simply never ended. There were about 50 employees, and for all of us, work was around the clock. The management team promised the product would ship, the product had to ship or the company would have no money. It didnt really bother me. I was fascinated by the workplace culture. And its actually pretty fun to be the only woman in a round-the-clock coding environment, even if they all were betrothed to parent-selected brides. Then one day, during one meeting, I said, I cant work this weekend. I realized that I should have said it earlier, to my boss, but I didnt realize wed be talking about it then, in a meeting with ten people. He said, You have to. We have a code lockdown on Monday. I cant. Im not working this weekend. I cant. Silence. What are you doing? Silence. Im having an abortion. Silence. Then a flurry to reschedule code lockdown for Tuesday so I could write copy on Monday. That was all. There was no other discussion. It should have been really difficult. But it wasnt, which I think made me much more brave about being myself as my career moved on. I realized that people just want to get the work done. They dont care very much about my personal life beyond how it relates to work. Heres another thing that happened at that company. We had an IPO. It was 1996, when IPOs were not a household term. In fact, as I am looking for info on the IPO now, Im realizing that  CyberMedia was actually an Indian holding company. Which, in hindsight makes sense since two pieces of software would not be enough for an IPO, even in 1996. But I didnt know that at the time. But more than about the windfall, I want to tell you about the web team I managed. The team was amazing, maybe just by accident, because it was always clear to us that no one in the company could have made an educated hiring decision about something like online content management or design. I am a magnet for a power vacuum, so I quickly took over the whole web site. I felt like Gods gift to online marketing because I was doing five simultaneous product launches in five different countries. I was bored by the financial details and felt that no cost was too high to make my launches run smoothly.  I was fascinated by the design details that reflected cultural differences. The company made software utilities to make computers run smoothly.  I can still see so vividly the British version of a site with a tidy PC wrapped in a red first-aid cross. Juxtaposed with the Japanese version that has what looks like a kamikaze induced explosion over a PC with motherboard pieces flying everywhere. To advertise the same software. That was fun. The designer was Mark Fearing, who, to this day, is the most talented artist Ive ever worked with. (Thats an illustration of his, at the top of this post.) But you know how I always tell you that its better to work with someone who is nice and easy to get along with than someone who is especially talented? Well, Mark proves this point. Every design, every illustration, every font treatment was gorgeous. It was fun just to come into work each morning and see what Mark had done the night before.  But once a week, Mark quit the job. He did it quietly, in private, with me. It was a quitting dance: Id tell him I promise the marketing department wont talk to him directly anymore. Hed tell me the Berlin Wall could not keep them out of his cube. Id tell him he cant quit because he has to pay rent. Hed tell me hed rather be homeless. He would indulge his fantasy of homelessness and then hed go back to his cube to work, largely unscathed. Then one day the head of marketing came to Marks cube to tell him, more blue. Its a nice color, she said. It looks good online. Can you use more of it? Mark stared at the design. Then he looked at her. Then he screamed: Blue? Blue? You want more blue? That is the worst, most ineffective piece of art direction  you can give. Its stupid. Why blue? Did your mom like blue? Is it because the sky is blue? You know what? I like yellow. Lets do more yellow. We need yellow! No. Lets do both. Then we can have green! Do you like green? Heads poked up from cubes to watch Mark do his tirade. Then he started packing up his desk while he screamed, Marketing at this company is stupid because of you! You have no idea what you want! You have no vision! You bring us all down with you! You can find someone else to do your design changes all day long! Im done! And he stormed out. It was great to see. Everyone hated the head of marketing. People who feel inspired do better work. The problem is, how do you get inspired? The writer Elizabeth Gilbert, who was, of course, inspired enough to write a bestseller, gave a TED talk about how we shouldnt pressure ourselves to find inspiration. It just comes. Which is, I think, why I look at my life at CyberMedia so fondly: the people were inspired. Tsun-yan Hsieh, from McKinsey, writes that while we cannot control our encounters with inspiration, we are more likely to get inspiration by constantly evolving. Our level of inspiration is commensurate with our levels to be true to ourselves. So back to Mark: Since those days at CyberMedia,  he has done animation and video and television game shows, becoming more and more notorious for making a scene when he quits. Until he started working for himself. And thats when things really bloomed for him. He  married a developer, moved to Portland, and had a daughter. And just this week, five billion illustrations later, the New York Times reviewed his new book, Earthling! and called it an exhilirating hoot. To watch Mark go from drawing computers exploding for unreasonable marketing managers to drawing characters in his own graphic novel is really inspiring. And Im so happy to be able to tell you all to buy the book. And think about Marks path: quitting job after job, taking risk after risk to figure out his right place finding inspiration by being true to yourself.

The definitive guide to combatting the uni blues - Debut

The definitive guide to combatting the uni blues - Debut This post was written by an external contributor. Is university life getting you down? Olivia Stringer has some advice to help combat the uni blues.   University can be extremely lonely for many students. Whether you’ve just returned to university after a long break of your mother cooking you copious amounts of food and catching up with old friends, or you feel your overload of assignments is preventing you from having a social life, it can be really hard to shake off feelings of isolation. First year students in halls can feel especially alone. Either because it’s their first time living away from home or purely because some university accommodation literally looks like it was modelled off a prison cell. However, fear not, for here is a list of ways to help you combat the uni blues. Go outside When you’re stuck in the library from 9-5 studying ‘Genome maintenance and regulation’, it can feel like theres no daylight. This is especially true in the long winter months that we are unfortunately subjected to in the UK. You leave early for uni and it’s pitch black outside, and when you return after a long day of lectures all the sunlight has disappeared. Depressing right? Therefore, it’s imperative to make use of every ounce of sunlight that you can. Use the great outdoors as an excuse for a healing study break. Go for a run in the park, or a stroll through the woods, or even a picnic if you’re feeling daring enough to battle sub-zero temperatures and a relatively high chance of torrential rain. Even if it’s only for a few minutes, exposure to sunlight is bound to decrease any feelings of melancholy. Call your friends and family Homesickness can hit you like a train at uni. Although you will probably meet lifelong friends there, with whom a cup of tea and a catch up can save you from a disastrous revision meltdown, sometimes you just need to hear the familiar voice of someone who doesn’t look at you like you’ve got three heads when you bombard them with your niche hometown slang. Arrange a time, perhaps once a week, where you can phone or facetime your loved ones. This will act as a well needed reminder that you have people who will love and support you. But more importantly, it will reaffirm your conviction that the correct term for a bread roll is undoubtedly, a cob. Plan a holiday Whether it’s a girl’s holiday in Zante or a relaxing break sipping Chardonnay in the South of France, going on holiday is a great way to destress and get some quality vitamin D. Plan your holiday for after exams so that you have something to look forward to in those never-ending months of revision. Its also a way of rewarding yourself for surviving another exhausting year at uni. Join a society It’s pretty much guaranteed that the first thing someone will say to you when you ask them how to make friends at uni is ‘join a society’. It’s also pretty much guaranteed that on your first week, you’ll sign up to every single society at the Freshers Fair, knowing full well that you have absolutely no intention of actually attending any of them. Don’t be one of these people. Step out of your comfort zone, join the cheerleading society, become a champion chess player, write for the student newspaper. Whether it’s getting pissed every week at the socials or working collectively to achieve a goal, societies can give you a sense of community that you won’t find anywhere else at uni, helping to leave any thoughts of loneliness behind. Give your room a makeover Although Feng Shui probably isn’t the most scientifically accurate of methods, its proven that happiness has a lot to do with your environment. Most university accommodation is a lifetime away from the Ritz. Therefore it can be incredibly easy to descend into misery when you are stuck in a damp room, revising and eating cold baked beans straight out of the tin. The solution? Rejuvenate your surroundings. Print off a load of pictures of your mates and arrange them in a quirky pattern on your walls. Collect an abundance of fairy lights and string them up around your bed. Burn incense/scented candles to do away with the stench of the three weeks’ worth of unwashed clothes. Undeniably, you will still be living in the same rundown, mould ridden student house as you were before. However, you will have added your own personal flair. Depression is becoming increasingly more common amongst uni students. However, try to remember that you never have to feel alone! Take breaks from studying to catch up with friends, exercise and explore the world around you. But most importantly, remember that there is far more to life than your favourite corner of the uni library.
